Add L-Lysine to your diet. The virus that causes cold sores thrives on and hides in a protein in our bodies called L-Arginine. This protein is abundant in nuts and seeds and a variety of other foods. L-Lysine, on the other hand, is a protein that cold sores do not thrive on or hide in, found abundantly in fish. The secret to preventing cold sores is to increase foods containing L-Lysine and reduce intake of foods that contain L-Arginine. The following link is a food chart listing quantities of L-Arginine and L-Lysine.
